BAAPS Announces Honorary Council Representative for Ireland
The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) proudly announces the appointment of Ms Éilís Fitzgerald, Consultant Plastic Surgeon, as Honorary BAAPS Council Representative for Ireland.
Born and raised in Dublin, Ms Fitzgerald undertook her primary medical degree at University College Dublin, graduating with honours in every subject in 2001. Having completed her intern year at St. Vincent’s University Hospital, she was appointed to the Basic Surgical Training Programme of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) at Tallaght Hospital. A year in plastic surgery followed, followed by completion of a research-based Masters in Surgery (MCh) at RCSI.
In 2007, Ms Fitzgerald was appointed to the Higher Surgical Training Programme in Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery – the only recognised training programme for plastic and cosmetic surgery in the country. Over the following six years she worked as a Specialist Registrar in adult and paediatric plastic surgery units in Dublin and Cork. Towards the end of this time, she sat the Intercollegiate Specialty Board examination, passing which conferred her the honour of being admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. On completion of training, Ms Fitzgerald was awarded a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training, and admitted onto the Specialist Register by the Irish and UK Medical Councils.
Ms Fitzgerald commenced full-time independent practice at the Beacon Hospital in Dublin in 2014. Her practice encompasses cosmetic breast surgery (breast reduction, uplift, augmentation, and removal/ replacement of implants), abdominoplasty, surgical and non-surgical facial aesthetics, and the surgical management of benign and malignant skin lesions, as well as the surgical management of certain hand conditions.
She is known for her meticulous approach, dedication to patient care, and her role as a mentor to upcoming surgeons. Ms Fitzgerald is also a frequent contributor to leading medical journals and has presented at numerous international conferences.
“I am honoured to have been appointed as the Honorary BAAPS Council Representative for Ireland”, says Fitzgerald.
“Having moved through the stages of trainee to full Member of the Association as I progressed from Fellow to Consultant Plastic Surgeon, I have felt the benefits of being part of a community of surgeons dedicated to excellence in aesthetic surgery.
I am of the belief that any plastic surgeon practising aesthetics, needs to be a part of an organisation dedicated to this exciting and innovative part of our speciality. For Irish surgeons, BAAPS is the obvious choice.
My aims as Representative are to promote membership of BAAPS to my Irish colleagues, and to continue to work collaboratively with my colleagues in the UK on the myriad of commonalities that impact aesthetic surgery practice across the jurisdictions. In particular, I hope to convey to trainees and new consultants in Ireland, the benefits for training and collegial support that the Association will inevitably bring to their practices.”
Ms Éilís Fitzgerald’s is one of three new National Representatives for BAAPS. Mr Alastair Lowrie has been appointed Honorary Council Representative for Scotland whilst Professor Iain Whitaker has been appointed Honorary Council Representative for Wales.
