The new updated government guidelines from the 10th of September have relaxed the PPE equipment needed to be used by beauty professionals such as hairdressers and beauty therapists in close contact services.

The guidelines now state, that practitioners should wear both a clear visor or goggles and a Type II face mask to keep their clients safe.

This change comes as a welcome to beauty salons and therapists who have for a long time struggled using visor, which have been steaming up and giving them headaches. Millie Kendall, chief executive of the British Beauty Council who has been consulating with the government on close contact services guidelines shares “We had raised our concerns with the government over wearing visors, as we heard from many hairdressers that they were constantly steaming up. Beauty professionals are working with sharp tools and chemicals, so it’s a real issue if the visibility is compromised. Now at least they have the option.”

The beauty industry is urged to follow the guidance, to avoid a second lockdown of the beauty industry.

What is a Type II Face Mask?

Type II face masks (EN14683) are medical face masks made up of a protective 3 ply construction that prevents large particles from reaching the patient or working surfaces, however they are not effective when blood or bodily fluids are present.

Characteristics of Type II face masks include:

- Pleat style with ear loops or ties

- Protective three-layer construction

- Available in a variety of colours and styles.

Guidance on Visors

- Visors must fit the user and be worn properly.

- They should cover the forehead, extend below the chin, and wrap around the side of the face.

- Both disposable and re-usable visors are available.

Thus far, no guidance has been provided on goggle specifications.
