The government has announced during the Downing Street Press Conference on 9 July 2020 that the beauty sector will be opening from the 13th of July. This follows the earlier easing of lockdown which allowed hairdressers to open on the 4th of July.

This latest update opening the beauty sector is subject to a restriction on particularly high risk services. All facial treatments are prohibited - only those from the neck down are permissible. A non exhaustive list of facial treatments that is not currently allowed to be carried out by salons is the following:

  • face waxing, sugaring or threading services

  • facial treatments

  • advanced facial technical (electrical or mechanical)

  • eyelash treatments

  • make-up application

  • dermarolling

  • dermaplaning

  • microblading

  • electrolysis on the face

  • eyebrow treatments

  • intricate detailing, outlining or shaving of beards

  • advanced beauty therapy and aesthetic treatments (this does not apply to medical settings)

Treatments restricted to the body, but excluding those in the highest risk zone, can resume with mitigations as set out in the “Keeping workers and clients safe during COVID-19 in close contact services” guidance which can be accessed here.

It is not yet known when the rest of the beauty industry will be allowed to open in England.

In other areas of the UK, Wales’ first minister Mark Drakeford has said that hairdressers can reopen in Wales from 13 July – although the date has not been fully confirmed, and will be in the next review of lockdown measures on 10 July. Hairdressers and barbers can reopen in Scotland from the 15 July with enhanced hygiene measures, which will be published this week. The rest of the personal sector which includes beauticians and nail salons will be allowed to reopen on the 22nd of July with enhanced hygiene measures in place.
