It’s not easy to take a rest from gels, acrylics and nail extensions - and when you do, your nails can often feel brittle and naked. The Japanese Manicure is severely underrated, and having had the treatment at the idyllic Wild Beauty, I can safely say it is a game-changer, promising not only aesthetic appeal but also substantial health benefits for your clients' nails. Rooted in tradition and natural ingredients, this technique is particularly suited as a holistic and gentle alternative to conventional manicures.

The Japanese manicure, popularised by the Japanese P. Shine brand, centres on the use of natural products that nourish and revitalise the nails. This method eschews metal tools and harsh chemicals, instead opting for ceramic files, wooden cuticle pushers, and deer or calfskin buffers.

Step-by-Step Process:

  1. Preparation:

    • Remove any old polish and disinfect nails with a warm, beeswax-based solution.

    • Shape the nails using a ceramic file.

  2. Cuticle Care:

    • Soften the cuticles with jojoba oil or similar.

    • Push back the cuticles gently with a wooden or ceramic stick.

  3. Application of Paste:

    • Buff the nails to prepare for the paste.

    • Apply a green paste rich in vitamins (A, B5, E, H) and minerals such as silica, keratin, and beeswax.

    • Buff the paste into the nails with a green deer or calfskin cloth.

  4. Sealing with Powder:

    • Apply a pink powder containing diatomaceous earth and pearl powder to seal the paste.

    • Buff the powder in with a pink cloth.

  5. Finishing Touches:

    • Optionally, provide a hand massage with essential oils to improve circulation and nourish the skin.

Immediately after the Japanese Manicure, nails look shiny and healthy

One of the key advantages of a Japanese manicure is the use of natural ingredients, which ensures the absence of harmful chemicals. The inclusion of vitamins, minerals, and beeswax helps in strengthening and nourishing the nails. The green paste, typically applied first, contains a blend of vitamins A, B5, E, and H, alongside keratin and silica from the Sea of Japan. Vitamin A promotes cell turnover and strengthens the nail bed, while vitamin E, known for its antioxidant properties, helps repair damaged cells and protect against environmental stressors. Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) enhances the flexibility and resilience of the nail, reducing brittleness and breakage. Keratin, a key protein in the nail structure, is supplemented to reinforce the nail’s integrity, making it less prone to splitting and peeling.

Silica, derived from natural sources, contributes to the strength and durability of the nail by enhancing the production of collagen, a crucial protein for maintaining the nail’s structural integrity. The presence of beeswax in the paste acts as a natural sealant, locking in moisture and creating a protective barrier that helps prevent dehydration and external damage.

After the paste is thoroughly massaged into the nail, a pink powder is applied to seal in the nutrients. This powder often contains diatomaceous earth, pearl powder, and additional vitamins and minerals. Diatomaceous earth, composed of fossilized algae, provides a fine abrasive quality that helps to polish the nail surface while delivering trace minerals that enhance nail strength and health. Pearl powder, rich in calcium, magnesium, and amino acids, contributes to the overall nourishment and shine of the nails. It helps in the regeneration of the nail tissue and adds a lustrous, healthy appearance.

The combination of these ingredients not only strengthens and revitalises the nails but also promotes healthy growth. The meticulous buffing process ensures that these nutrients penetrate deeply into the nail bed, maximising their beneficial effects. This holistic approach, free from harsh chemicals and invasive techniques, results in nails that are not only visually appealing but also fundamentally healthier and more resilient.

A Japanese manicure typically lasts about two weeks, though regular treatments can extend its benefits. Encouraging clients to return for bi-weekly sessions will help maintain their nail health and appearance.

"I noticed a trend for our clients wanting something more natural especially during breaks from gel treatments or to strengthen their nails. This inspired me to introduce a unique treatment that very few salons offer, with a specialized technique that makes it truly special. Clients love the results, enjoying healthier, beautiful nails that look stunning and they feel great!" comments Mary Simmons, founder of Wild Beauty, on the indtroduction of the Japaense Manicure.

While DIY kits are available, the precision and care required for a Japanese manicure mean that professional application is highly recommended. This not only ensures optimal results but also provides clients with a relaxing and luxurious experience. Incorporating Japanese manicures into your service menu can differentiate your salon and attract clients seeking natural and effective nail care solutions.

By integrating the Japanese manicure into your treatment menu, you can provide a service that truly enhances nail health, combining tradition with modern nail care needs.
