Hot Topic: Eyelash Extensions in the Summer
The current extreme heatwave in the UK is every lash tech’s worst nightmare, not only is it harder to work wish lashes but lash technicians are hearing from clients that their lashes are not lasting as they would usually due to improper aftercare in the summer - so what advice can you give to your clients?
Avoid Direct Heat
Sitting in the warm sun is bliss, but extreme heat can damage extensions causing a “drop” in the curl of your extensions, singing or even prematurely falling out if you lay in the sun directly after a lash appointment.
It’s best to avoid sun tanning for 24 hours after an appointment, if laying in the sun - use eye protection i.e. sunglasses and stay away from open flames such as barbeques, bonfires and grills. Despite this, most clients will still notice that their lashes will shed faster than normal so it is important to prepare your clients for this. To mitigate this, it is recommendable to book an infill quicker than you would usually.
Oils and Sweat
It’s pretty impossible to be walking/running around in this heat and not have excess sweat. Unfortunately, swear carries salt and other properties that can breakdown lash bonds. One of the main purposes of eyelashes is to collect oils/dirt and debris to protect the eye which is why your eyelash extensions will be heavily affected.
It’s recommended when working out or in the sun, to use a dry, clean towel to dry off lashes. At the end of the day, it’s advisable to wash your extensions thoroughly with water and dry them into position.
Can you swim with lashes?
Yes you can! However remember that chlorine water can cause issues with retention and in breaking down flue bonds, causing crunchy lashes or irritation to the eye as the chemical chlorine is stuck on lashes and needs to be thoroughly rinsed. The best mitigating method is to wash lashes with water after swimming and dry them by patting them dry with a clean towel and brushing your lashes back into place to ensure fans are open and clean. Dry and clean lashes last longer.
Sunscreen and Tanning Oils
Always protect your skin and wear sunscreen. While most lotions contain oils and ingredients that do not mix well with lash glue - they are essential for your skin. In this case it’s recommended to apply to the eye area but not lather product on and rinse well at the end of the day to ensure all product is removed.
