Dive into our exclusive forecast to discover the top summer trend predictions for 2024, along with expert commentary on how to achieve these soon-to-be-coveted looks. Whether you're lounging by the pool or strutting down piazzas, we've got the scoop on the must-have looks.
Glowing, Natural Skin
Say goodbye to heavy makeup and hello to natural radiance! As seen on Hailey Bieber and Millie Bobby Brown, the secret to that coveted glow is all about nurturing your skin from the inside out. Focus on hydrating formulas and gentle exfoliation to reveal your skin's natural glow.
SPF (with Ceramides)
SPF should always be trending, especially in the summer. In 2024, we’re choosing to protect our skin from the sun with sunscreen that's packed with ceramides. These powerhouse ingredients not only shield the skin from the sun's harmful UV rays but also lock in moisture, leaving it feeling hydrated and nourished all summer long.
Mermaidcore
Dive into dreamy mermaid vibes with shimmering makeup and iridescent colours. As seen on Dua Lipa, Emily Ratajkowski, and many more... this trend is all about the ocean blues and holographic finishes. For a mystical look, think shimmering eyeshadows in shades of ocean blue and silver, and holographic highlights that catch the light like sunlight dancing on water.
Whether you're channelling your inner siren with a bold statement look or just adding a touch of aquatic allure to your everyday routine, mermaidcore is set to take over this summer.
Exomes
Exomes are pioneering cutting-edge skincare in 2024, and the world seems to agree - with Google searches going up by 5000%.
Offering the latest E50 Exosome Treatment, EF Medispa’s founder and creative director, Esther Fieldgrass, gives us the low down on what makes them so game changing: "Exosomes are gaining widespread recognition as they have been found to be powerful and beneficial for multiple skin issues including stimulating skin regeneration, reducing inflammation in the skin, and pigmentation. They do this by transmitting signals between the old unhealthy cells, triggering them to regenerate. Applied topically, reintroducing exosomes to the skin allows the inactive skin cells to repair, strengthen and rejuvenate. Due to their anti-inflammatory properties, exosomes can also be applied topically after certain procedures to speed up healing time.”
Teddy Make-up
This latest TikTok trending look - thanks to Lily-Rose Depp - keeps it classy with soft, neutral Teddy makeup. Fresh from M.A.C’s very own collection, Dominic Skinner, Global Senior Artist at M.A.C Cosmetics, tells us more about how to achieve this iconic look: “Teddy Makeup is all about that warm matte brown shade that feels soft and looks cuddly. Taking those richer and golden brown shades and layering them to create a light smoke around the eye or a warm subtlety contoured lip. A perfect mix of 90’s and 00’s but applied with a modern hand.
This look is all about softness. Blended edges, blurred lines and velvet matte textures. Start by lining the eye with a warm brown eye pencil like Teddy by MAC, and then smudge it out with either a finger or a brush. Then apply a mid tone brown like Soft Brown Eyeshadow by MAC, over the lid from lash line to socket. Next, with a slightly darker brown like MAC Espresso arpund the lash line and in the socket making sure you blend it so it almost becomes one colour. Finish off with a campy mascara. For lips, use a warm brown lip pencil like MAC Spice or Chestnut to drawn around the lip working slightly into the centre. Finish off with a classic neutral brown pink matte lipstick, like Velvet Teddy or the new Warm Teddy by MAC, and apply it to the centre of the lip and out towards the lip edge and slowly blend the liner and lipcolour together.”
Scalp Care = Hair Care
Hair gurus are emphasising that scalp care is the key to optimal hair care, especially during the summer months. Don't let the heat and humidity wreak havoc on your locks. Instead, indulge your scalp with much-needed TLC using products tailored to soothe sunburn and combat dryness.
Lipgloss Nails
Juanita Huber-Millet, Founder and Creative Director at Townhouse tells us: ”Move over glossy lips, lip gloss nails are having a serious moment right now! This super wearable, fuss-free look follows on from the popular dewy make-up trend sported by many celebs and seen all over TikTok. The key to perfecting this look is pairing a sheer pale pink or milky tone base colour with a high gloss topcoat. This look is stunning for mid to long-length nails but also perfectly suits shorter lengths and shapes.
To achieve the ultimate minimalist look, precision is key! It all starts with a flawless manicure, the preparation of the nail - including filing, buffing and cuticle work - plays a crucial role in achieving a polished and professional finish. These steps ensure the perfect canvas for a minimalist manicure to shine. For the finish, opt for neutral tones of pink, milky white or nude for the ultimate healthy glow. So getting a minimal look takes some time!
The most popular shades at Townhouse are Brownlow Road and Barlett Street, both sheer toned pinks - perfect for the ultimate Lip Gloss nails! Other beautiful shades to create this look are ‘Bubble Bath’ by OPI, ‘Negligee’ by CND and ‘Elegance’ by Nailberry.”
90s Nostalgia
If the runways are anything to go by, the 90s are back in town. Get ready to channel your inner 90s cool with a summer style that screams effortless chic. Take cues from Jennifer Aniston's iconic look as Rachel Green on Friends and embrace those matte lips, a staple of 90s beauty, for that perfect touch of retro glam.
And what's a 90s-inspired look without denim? Whether it's classic jeans or trendy jean shorts, denim is a must-have in your summer wardrobe. Pair them with a corset for a touch of edgy sophistication. Layer it over a flowy blouse or wear it alone for a bold statement piece that's sure to turn heads.
Face-framing Updos
Summer is all about those effortless, breezy vibes, and face-framing tendrils are the perfect way to capture that carefree spirit.
Katie Allan, Hair Stylist & Founder of MAYFIVE Hair tells us how to achieve this look on different hair types: “Face framing tendrils can be very flattering and act as a ‘comfort blanket’ for most people. Any hair type can have them, typically cut into there natural parting which tends to be the centre or off centre.
[…] If your hair is naturally curly it’s best to keep the tendrils to your natural texture. As soon as you start to apply heat, straighten them out on a regular basis it can cause serious damage to the hair as it is finer and more fragile.
If your face shape is more oblong, you will want the shape to be more cheek bone or higher to help flatter your face shape. Rounder face shapes will want the hairs to be blunter on the ends to help compliment.
Postpartum hair is a lot thinner around the front hairline as you get hair loss after having a baby, so you will need to have your stylist assess how much thickness you will achieve from the tendrils if your hairline is sparser.”
