The Biggest Cut & Style Hair Trends for Autumn 2024

Tom Smith, dubbed “The Hairvoyant” of the hair industry has unpicked and predicted the “it” colour trends for the upcoming months. Tom is an international Artist in residence at Billi Currie, Artist at Olaplex and International Creative Colour Director at Evo, his passion for hair is both creative and cerebral, believing a mindful approach to hairdressing can empower and bring purpose to life, truly cementing identity.

As the warmer months draw to a close, we predictably see a shortening of hair lengths and an intensity of tone return.

The themes of indulgence and richness that we’ve seen throughout this year sustain with a continued focus on hair health, and overall quality of shape and tone.

The cosiness of Curtain Bangs fits perfectly with the change of season and has a practical element that facilitates the generous trimming of the weaker face-framing hairs after a summer of potential damage. The Tiara Bun offers a practical yet regal option that fuses ‘health and wealth’ once more, while Cloud Curls celebrate texture and youthfulness for those opting to retain length and natural movement. Two trending bob shapes, one Tucked and one Laser Sharp, offer options for those who prefer a mid-length style, both focusing on precision and perfection. A noticeable lack of shorter styles is due to a year-long emphasis on hair health, meaning the majority are enjoying chin-length or longer styles as we move into the cooler seasons.

Autumn hair combines cosiness and warmth with a regal, ethereal, and vibrant energy.

Curtain Bangs

Long or side swept bangs or fringe with a central parting, typically blow - dried with a voluminous bend at a length that grazes from the brow bone to the cheekbone. They’re a fantastic choice for those with a heart shaped face or a larger forehead this style frames the eyes and is a great ‘cosy’ look for the cooler autumn months.

Products and Tips: Fringes and bangs that sit on the face tend to get oily more quickly, and so after using a round barreled brush (or a blow - drying tool such as the Dyson airwrap or the ghd 2 in 1 blow - dry styler) to curve the fringe towards the nose use a light styling powder, a dry texturizing spray or a dry shampoo to add control and keep the fringe airy and fresh for longer.

Tiara Bun

A regal bun, polished or textured that sits on the crown of the head is a great choice to lift the face and add height, and glamour to your look. It can be all secured and swept up, or it you can leave strands out around the face to soften the look. This is great for those who like a practical style or who prefer their hair secured out of their face. This also helps to lift the face and contour the cheekbones and can easily be done yourself at home.

Products and Tips: A great option for day 2, 3 or beyond this style is easier to achieve when the hair is not too fluffy or clean, although a fluffier bun can also work well with the help of a dry texturizing spray

Cloud Curls

Natural looking, airy and textured waves or curls with a halo of intentional fluff that brings a youthful, ethereal and carefree energy. Ideal on longer or naturally textured hair this style is relaxed and will bring the echo of summer into the autumn months

Products and Tips: Use your natural texture if you have it, or create a similar style by braiding your hair after rough drying just before it has completely dried/cooled. Leave it to set and loosen with your fingers. For a more polished look use a small curling iron with small sections and alternate the direction you twist the hair. Finish with a styling powder or texturizing spray and shake upside down for the airy fluffy finish

Tucked Bob

A bob haircut that is either one length or lightly layered, secured behind one or both ears. This can work on all lengths and styles of bob and can be achieved by simply tucking one or both sides behind your ears. This can have an androgynous or business like energy and is great for widening a narrow or long face, or helping to improve the look of thickness in finer hair types.

Products and Tips: This works best on hair that has a bit of product in it, as freshly washed or fluffy hair can be hard to secure behind the ear. Use a volume spray or mousse before blow - drying for extra style support and use a strong hold hair spray on the hair around the ear to secure. For a more stable result, use a small clip or slide behind the ear to hold the hair in place .

Laser Cut Bob

A perfectly measured, sharp and precise, one length bob that sit between the very top of the shoulder and the corner of the jaw. Works best with a middle parting and can be combined with a fringe if desired. The length can be adjusted to suit many face shapes but for a softer result go for chin length or longer, or for a bolder alternative go above the chin. Best styled straight or with minimal texture this is a great option for those with fine hair as the cut will increase the appearance of thickness and density in the hair. Its also very easy to achieve for those with naturally flat or fine hair. An expert precision haircut is required.

Products and Tips: Products that keep the hair smoother such as heat protecting, anti frizz creams or serums are the best choice for blow - drying this shape into place and following with straightening irons on a low temperature will seal the style in.
