New research, conducted by natural carotenoid manufacturer Lycored, has shown that achieving a natural appearance is the top priority for skincare users.

This study was conducted across six countries and surveyed ~500 regular users of skincare products. The participants were shown a list of eight different skincare goals and ranked them in order of importance. Natural appearance was considered the most important goal, ranked highest by 77% of consumers, followed by smooth texture (76%), youthful appearance (64%), even-complexion (61%) and reduced redness (37%).

Zev Ziegler, Head of Global Brand and Marketing (Health) at Lycored, stated that the research provides a ‘valuable insight into what consumers ultimately want when they buy a product for their skin.’ He also commented on the possible implications for manufacturers sourcing their ingredients, explaining that consumers who strive for a natural looking appearance are also likely to purchase products containing natural ingredients.

The study’s findings have also enabled Lycored to investigate what the concept ‘glow’ means to consumers. Achieving this ‘glow’ is increasingly important to consumers; however, it was previously a difficult quality to define. In Lycored’s report, Inner Light, they concluded that the majority of consumers (64%) understand ‘glow’ in holistic terms, where both ‘from-within’ and external factors play a role. The external factors include the use of skincare products, whilst ‘from-within’ factors include emotional and mental wellbeing.
