‘Face masks’ used to be associated with a nice bubble bath, some chocolate and a glass, or two, of wine. Nowadays, amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, we associate ‘face masks’ with something completely different. Protective face masks are now another tool to help prevent the spread of the virus. The UK government has recently advised the public to wear face coverings in shops and on public transport, as part of their lockdown easing plan. However, wearing face coverings for long periods of time can result in skin irritation and even break outs. So here are some steps to help you protect both your health, and your skin:

1. Choose your material wisely: When choosing a face mask make sure it is made out of a suitable material. You want it to be protective, yet light fabric. Wearing masks for long periods of time can create a warn and damp environment, perfect for bacteria to thrive in. Fabrics such as cotton are light and breathable but are also tightly woven.

2. Keep it natural: Try to steer clear of makeup. Now is the perfect time to give your face a much-needed break and to go makeup free. Wearing a mask over makeup will not only spoil your hard work, but is even more likely to result in blocked pores and breakouts.

3. Cleanse your face: Trapped breath creates a moist and oily environment under your mask. Once you are home and finished with wearing your mask, and washing your hands, give your face a good cleanse.

4. Avoid harsh products: During and after cleansing, try to avoid any harsh products. Your face mask will probably cause some skin irritation, so try to avoid strong products including retinols or acid based products, such as salicylic or glycolic serums. Try to use more natural products and ones that focus on hydration.

5. Use a moisturising cream: Before putting on your mask, apply a moisturising cream. The cream will act as a barrier, and should help to reduce friction. This is definitely a great tip if you suffer from dry and sensitive skin.

6. Wash your mask: Washing your mask after every wear is essential, in order for your mask to be an effective tool in the fight against coronavirus. However, it also gets rid of bacteria and other dirt that could clog up your pores. You can wash your mask in the washing machine or in boiling water with detergent. If you have sensitive skin, try to be mindful of the type of detergent you use.

So there you have it, six steps to help you look after your skin, whilst also ensuring you protect yourself in these unprecedented times.
