Key Points of Discussion when Talking to Your Clients About SPF

Nadia Rafi, Commercial Director at Feel Good Promotions, discusses talking to your beauty clients about SPF - things they may not know and SPFs for their skin types.

When clients come into the salon for beauty treatments and services during the summer months, particularly in relation to their skin, it’s so important that you talk to them about SPF and how this should be used all year round but particularly in the summer time when UV rays are stronger.

The benefits of using sun protection/SPF are of course providing clients with UVA and UVB protection, but also helping to reduce free radicals and to avoid the skin from ageing prematurely, whilst also keeping the skin smooth, hydrated and radiant.

There are also now many other SPFs on the market for clients that provide further offerings. With so many offerings it’s important to talk to your clients about their lifestyle, their skin type and the best SPF suited to them.

When it comes to skin type, for those with oily skin they should avoid any sun products that are too thick in consistency and that may lead to blocking their pores further and instead, they should opt for something more lightweight. For those with dry skin, they will want something that is highly moisturising on the skin and a cream or lotion-based product may be more suitable than that of a water or oil based product. For those with sensitive skin types it’s so important that you offer an SPF that does not have harsh chemicals or preservatives and that will be kinder on the skin. Of course if your client is lighter skin toned they will definitely want to opt for a higher factor to avoid burning. No matter what your skin tone, the higher factor of SPF the better and the more protection the clients skin will have from UV rays.

What many clients forget about and it is so important for us to recommend in salons is protection for other areas of our body, including the hair and scalp and also the lips. Many clients forget about SPF on their lips in particular and this is so important, as our lips are an extremely sensitive area of the body due to the thin skin and skin cancer can be very dangerous in this area.

In terms of application, for clients who want to wear makeup, it’s important to recommend applying SPF before applying the makeup. Facial SPF is just as important as body SPF and should be applied daily – it’s best to recommend something with a light texture under makeup.

Be sure to also discuss with your clients After Sun after a day in the sun, which will work to soothe any redness the skin has and keep skin refreshed, hydrated, soft and smooth.
